If you go on The Internet and Google bill collectors, you will see so much negative information that you could easily come to the false conclusion that one out of two bill collectors are the descendants of King Kong, Godzilla and Frankenstein. Now don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that there are no rude bill collectors out here.
Just like any other industry, you will find a minority of people that operate outside of the rules and regulations of that industry. Because the foundation of the collection industry is basically one that easily create conflict, it can appear that most bill collectors operate outside of the law. Let me give you an example. As a former collection manager I trained over 200 collectors to legally use fear, shame and guilt to get people to pay.
I had many collectors that went back in forth from Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde type of personalities. Although bill collectors have commonly been the blunt of jokes for people for more than a quarter of a century the vast majority of them are law abiding citizens that have the same feeling and emotions that everyone else has.
So why do so many bill collectors come across as being rude or uncaring? Let’s look at this. Bill collectors are under pressure to obtain their monthly goals. This pressure can come in the form of casual to extreme. Casual can mean a statement like-you need to work on collecting more money to-it sounds like a cemetery in here let’s collect more money-to if you don’t collect more money some of you might lose your job. Next time we will discuss another reason why bill collectors are so rude. As usual, your comments are welcome.
