When I became a bill collector it was a very humbling experience. Because I did not understand  that people could have so much debt, I thought everyone would either pay me right then or in a few days. I quickly found out that if I was going to be successful as a debt collector, I would have to have a change of attitude in a hurry.

I also discovered that if I did not change my attitude the office manager, my supervisor, my collection peers, the clients we represented and my own creditors would motivate me to change it. I soon discovered that when collections were good and complaints from debtors were low or managable there was less pressure on the collectors. When goals were not being met and complaints were off the hook it could feel like a pressure cooker in the office.

Because most bill collectors have monthly goals to obtain each month and don’t make a huge guaranteed wage to counter the pressure they are experiencing, they consciously or unconsciouly start to put pressure on debtors to either pay sooner, pay larger sums of money and employ legal strategies that use fear, shams and guilt as tools to motivate people to pay their debts.

So what do you do if you find yourself constantlydealing with bill collectors that are either rude or are always edgy?

1. Keep in mind that they are under pressure to perform

2. Don’t be so quick to make payment arrangements without going 

    over your complete financiual picture
