In all my years in the collection industry, I have indirectly and directly dealt with bad bill collectors. At any given time when I was working with up to 30 collectors, there was always two or three that I would classify as bad collectors. Bad could be classified as being rude as well as doing other things that are against the law. In my example of 30 collectors, that would come out to about 3%.
Now listen to these next statements. Due to the nature of the industry and the pressure to collect money, most people think that most bill collectors routinely break the law. Although what I am about to say is not a scientific answer, it is one to think about. A popular television program asked 100 people what they thought were the top five professions that break the law. Three of those were attorneys, salespeople and politicians. Surprisingly bill collectors were not in the top five.
When people are asked to pay back bad debt, because of the perception that people have of bill collectors, whether collectors are excellent, good, bad or downright ugly, most of them will be classified as the scum of the earth. Even If complaints about bill collectors, dropped 70% overnight, I believe the perception of bill collectors will not get any better.
Although most bill collectors adhere to all the local and national laws, because they are dealing with a very sensitive part of people’s lives, even a small percentage of collectors breaking the laws can seem like most of them are breaking laws.
